submission guidelines

MUSIKA JORNAL is a refereed scholarly periodical prepared by an Editorial Board comprised of faculty members and researchers from the College of Music, College of Arts and Letters and other units of the University of the Philippines that maintain close linkage with the UP Center for Ethnomusicology. The journal aims to provide a forum for the discussion of musical and other expressive traditions in the Philippines and the greater Asia-Pacific region as well as the new music of contemporary composers from this geographic area.

The submissions of articles must follow these general guidelines:

Articles

  1. Article should be around 7,000-8,000 words in English or Filipino (if it is a translation from other language/s, please indicate);

  2. Abstract should not be more than 150 words in English;

  3. Two (2) to three (3) keywords in English (unless proper nouns) should describe the content of the article;

  4. Preparing your files for the submission process: 

Documents 

MS word (.doc) format, A4-sized, Times new roman, 12 pt., double-spaced, 1” margin all-sides;

  1. Title Page – with identifying author information;

  2. Main Document – the manuscript file;

    • Has no identifying author information;

    • Includes a glossary of musical/technical terms appearing in the text;

  3. Supplemental Files for Review (when applicable)

  4. Supplemental Files NOT for Review

    • A brief biography of the author (not more than 100 words);

Figures and Tables

Print resolution TIFF or PNG

  1. All figures and tables must be properly labeled/captioned;

  2. Submitted as separate files

Photos, Media and Annexes

Print resolution TIFF or PNG, full-paged annexes in print quality PDF

  1. Photographs, illustrations, music, and others should also be submitted in a separate file;

  2. If media such as video and audio are included, author should be willing to host media at their own expense;

Format

  1. All annotations reflected in endnotes;

  2. In-line citations, annotations, and bibliography should follow Chicago Manual of Style citation formatting;

Other Documents

  1. Cover letter for research projects with funding agencies;

Reviews

  1. Audio, film, book, and performance reviews should be around 1,000-1,500 words in English or Filipino (if it is a translation from other language/s, please indicate);

  2. The content of the review should include a brief summary of the material, followed by the author’s evaluation of the material’s coverage in relation to trends and discourse in music and other expressive traditions;

  3. Preparing your files for the submission process: 

Documents 

MS word (.doc) format, A4-sized, Times new roman, 12 pt., double-spaced, 1” margin all-sides;

  1. Title Page – with identifying author information;

    • Books: Title in bold. On the new line, list the material’s author, place of publication, publisher/press and date. On a new line, list the review author’s name in italics.

    • Audio, film, and performance: On the new line, list the material’s producer (if audio), director (if video or performance), year of creation or performance, length, and distributor and distributor contact information; on a new line, list the review author’s name in italics.

We accept academic papers, reports of special projects, thesis, and dissertations formatted for journal publication on topics of music, dance, theater, music education, music archiving, music production, music instruments and manufacture, intangible cultural heritage, traditional knowledge and other forms of expressive traditions, other multidisciplinary topics which involve music, movement, and sound, etc. 

 

Authors may submit more than one article or review. Articles and reviews for submission must not have been previously published. The author is responsible for securing publication permits for copyrighted and/or licensed materials to be used in their submission. Names of transcribers, annotators and other collaborators in the article should be properly recognized in the submissions.
